Minority, Women & Veteran-Owned Business Funding
Minority-, women-, and veteran-owned businesses can access dedicated funding and federal set-aside programs — 8(a) Business Development, Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB), Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned (SDVOSB), and HUBZone — that reserve contracts and reduce competition for certified firms.
Set-asides vs. grants
Most dedicated support for these businesses comes as contract set-asides rather than pure grants: the government reserves certain contracts for certified firms. There are also grants through the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) and many state and corporate diversity programs.
Certification is the key that unlocks set-asides. It signals eligibility and dramatically narrows the competitive field.
- 8(a) — for socially and economically disadvantaged owners
- WOSB / EDWOSB — women-owned small businesses
- SDVOSB — service-disabled veteran-owned
- HUBZone — businesses in historically underutilized zones
How to get certified
Certifications are administered through the SBA (and SAM.gov for registration). Each has ownership, control, and eligibility criteria. Once certified, your status is visible to contracting officers searching for qualified firms.
